MICRODERMABRASION

Derma GLOW II is the preferred device used at Laser Elite Centre. It has these benefits and is used in the following skin conditions:

Benefits:

  • Balance skin tone
  • Repair sun damage
  • Minimizes and treats Acne
  • Soften fine lines
  • Treats enlarged pores
  • Non-surgical, safe, effective "lunch hour" procedure
  • Effective on all skin colors and types
  • No anesthetic required
  • Excellent for skin sensitive to chemical procedures
  • Minimal redness
  • Virtually no side effects
  • Gives the skin an overall fresh, healthy-looking glow
  • An individualized skin care program may be recommended to maximize results
  • Requires multiple sessions and maintenance treatments

Microdermabrasion is effective in reducing fine lines, "crow's feet," age spots and acne scars. It stimulates the production of skin cells and collagen. It has proven to be a very popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

Technique:

The hand piece emits crystals onto the surface of the skin, resulting in a gentle abrasion or "polishing" process. Each treatment takes from 30 minutes to an hour. The number of treatments recommended for maximal results can range between 5 and 12, spaced from 2 to 3 weeks apart. Maintenance of results requires periodic repeat treatments after the initial regimen is completed. MicroDerm Abrasion may be combined with a light chemical peel to increase the effect and or any one of a number of facials that Laser Elite Centre services, e.g. Chocolate, Honey, Lavender masks to name a few. All products used in our practice, are organic.

MICROPIGMENTATION (PERMANENT MAKE-UP OR TATTOO)

"Micropigmentation - sometimes referred to as "permanent make-up or tattoo" - is a technique in which minute, metabolically inert pigment granules are implanted below the epidermis for cosmetic and/or corrective enhancement. This ancient Asian beautification practice has gained popularity around the world. Micropigmentation is used to enhance facial features like eyebrows, lashes and lips; to improve conditions like scarring and vitiligo (uneven pigmentation).

Technique:

Typically, two treatments are necessary, one or more weeks apart. Needles penetrate the skin a few millimeters, in what is basically a tattooing process.

Benefits:

  • No downtime and one can resume most normal activities within 24 hours for majority of patients.
  • The pigments used are made from safe, generally non-reactive compounds approved by the FDA.
  • The process is relatively quick (for example, an upper and lower lash line takes about 30 to 40 minutes). Skin returns to normal by the next day. Swelling or redness is generally mild.
  • Mild discomfort during procedure is avoided using topical and/or local anesthesia.
  • Good alternative for women with make-up allergies (although procedure is designed to enhance features, not replace make-up altogether).
  • Pigments are individually mixed for customized results, and designed to look natural. Results can be seen immediately (although full end result will be seen in about three weeks).

Other considerations to factor in:

  • Permanent procedure. Laser surgery is required to remove pigment.
  • Patients must avoid direct sunlight, refrain from applying make-up, and wearing contact lenses for a few days, and avoid swimming for several weeks.
  • A small number of patients may experience allergic reaction or infection.

PIGMENTED LESIONS (SUN SPOTS)

A few scattered freckles on the face might be considered cute, but when years of sun damage begin to add up, the results are anything but. Most pigmented lesions can be directly attributed to overexposure of the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. Preventative measures should always be taken by using sun-block 30+ and avoiding the midmorning and midday sun. This won't correct any damage already done, but it can help keep pigment problems from getting any worse.

How Are Pigmented Spots Removed?

There are different treatments available to reduce unwanted brown spots. The type of lesion will determine the best method for removing it.

LASER REMOVAL Individual sunspots and freckles respond very well to laser treatment. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment, thereby lightening or destroying it, and leaving the skin looking uniform in color and texture. Most patients tolerate the treatment very well, describing the sensation to be like the snap of a rubber band. After treatment, the area may feel similar to slight sunburn. Within an hour to a day, discomfort disappears. Results are seen within 2 to 30 days, depending on the lesion and exact type of laser use.

SPIDER VEINS

Spider veins are hereditary, and while most commonly found on the thigh or lower leg, can form virtually anywhere on the leg, from the uppermost region of the thigh to the ankle. Occasionally, spider veins will appear on the face.

The causes of varicose veins are unclear. However, certain factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy, hormonal factors, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and trauma.

Spider veins are small red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles. It's estimated that at least one third of the adult female population is troubled with this common problem. People often seek treatment for spider veins because of cosmetic concern. However, it is also common for spider veins to cause symptoms, such as aching, heaviness, itching and night cramps.

Spider veins usually take on one of the three following forms:

  • They may appear in a pattern that resembles branches on a tree.
  • They may be in a linear pattern that appear as thin separate lines.
  • They may appear in a spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a central point.
  • The term spider veins refer to small abnormal and unwanted veins. They are small red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles.

Laser and Pulsed Light treatments are being used as an alternative to or as a complement to sclerotherapy for small surface veins, the more blue/purple in appearance, the more effective the treatment is. They all work on the same basic principle: a light beam is pulsed onto the veins in order to seal them off, causing them to dissolve. Successful light-based treatment requires adequate heating of the veins. Several treatments are usually needed for optimal results, at 8 to 12 week intervals. Fair skinned are best candidates, there is better absorption.

Which Lasers are used?

There are a variety of lasers and light sources being used to treat surface leg veins. These include, but are not limited to the long-pulse alexandrite, diode and long-pulse Nd; Yag lasers as well as intense pulsed light devices. These light devices are generally used with cooling of the top skin layer with cool gel, chilled air or other cooling methods. Cooling helps to reduce discomfort and lowers the risk of injuring the skin.

What is the Treatment Like?

The treatment consists of administering pulses of light over the problem veins. Eye protection should be provided to the patient during treatment. Many patients think laser treatment will be painless. This is not entirely true. The laser needs to heat the vein adequately in order to seal it off. Most patients will feel a brief heating during pulsing of the laser. This has been described as a rubber band snapping sensation. Cool packs can be used after treatment, to bring comfort to the patient, and to cool the area that has been treated.
